VILLANOVA DEL GHEBBO

The name of Villanova del Ghebbo was adopted in 1500 in reference to the stream that flowed nearby. The most valuable artistic building of this small village located on the banks of the Adigetto is the parish church, dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel, built between the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th centuries. Inside the church, we can admire the beautiful ceiling that represents S. Michael and the triumph of the Virtues, painted by Giovanni Battista Canal, follower of Tiepolo.

Not far from the historic centre, is the seventeenth-century oratory of Ca 'Nova with a baroque bell tower dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The small church is the object of great devotion because of the miraculous powers people attribute to the Madonna.

Until a few years ago, Villanova del Ghebbo was the main production centre in Polesine for the shoe industry. Today, from this once thriving business, remain just a few shops and laboratories.

LENDINARA

Founded on the Adigetto, one of the old courses of the river Adige, Lendinara is an important centre from the historical, artistic, cultural and religious points of view.

Since the eighteenth century, in fact, this little town has been honoured with the title of "Athens of Polesine" because of the artistic treasures it contains.

A wealth of religious architecture, Lendinara is a place of pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Pilastrello, a monastic complex dating back to 1500. Also noteworthy are the Cathedral of St. Sofia, with the high bell tower (one of the highest in Italy), and the church of St. Biagio. Among the public buildings in Piazza Risorgimento, we need to mention the Praetorian Palace, the Clock Tower and the Loggia of the Town Hall.

The romantic walk along the course of the Adigetto makes us discover places historically linked to Garibaldi. In fact, A. Mario, an important Italian patriot and politician who championed the cause of the Risorgimento in the United States, was born in Lendinara.

To this important figure and to the historical period in which he lived, is dedicated a beautiful reenactment, "Go Garibaldi", that happens every year during the month of June. Also in the arts Lendinara was a fertile native land: one of the major wood carvers of the 1400s, Lorenzo Canozio, was born here and so was Domenico Montagnana, one of the most important luthiers of 1700s, to whom Lendinara dedicates a festival.

POLESELLA

Overlooking the river Po, the village of Polesella developed along the course of the Fossa di Polesella, a canal that connected the Po and the Canalbianco. After the 1951 flood, the Fossa has been closed thus changing forever the urban physiognomy of Polesella. However, its wealthy historical past can be easily seen when we wander along its streets. We can admire the rich villas built by the Venetian families in the 17th and 18th centuries. Some of the most beautiful villas are: the Armellini villa, with its typical cubic shape and a series of head-shaped friezes that adorn the façade, Ca’ Rosetta, one of the very few villas with two loggias in Veneto, and the amazing Morosini villa overlooking the Po. Nearby this villa, lies the Borgo S. Maura, one of the very few inhabited floodplain villages overlooking the large river. Some of the seven small beaches, close to the same number of piers, are still a regular destination for the local fishermen who have a close relationship with the Po. Polesella is probably one of the few villages in Polesine whose territory can be entirely traveled by bicycle in complete safety thanks to the particular attention paid to the promotion of tourism and environment. Polesella is the intersection for the cycling routes of Adige-Po, Left Po and Fissero-Tartaro-Canalbianco-Po di Levante. It is also forms one of the sections of the Silk Road route and the St. Anthony Route. Popular appointments for thousands of tourists are the Palio of the Angun, in June, and the White Night, in July.

VILLAMARZANA

Is historically notorious for the massacre of 43 partisans killed by the fascists in 1944. The house of the barber, where the execution took place, is occupied by a small museum - that can be visited by appointment - that narrates what happened. The names of the 43 victims are remembered in the shrine next door. Between Canalbianco and the centre of Villamarzana, near the paleo riverbed of the Po of Adria, a very important archaeological area has been discovered. More recent is the presence of Benedictine monks, who first reclaimed the inland of Polesine. Their testimony is the beautiful church built in 1100 in the locality of Gognano. In this little village, we can also see a delightful complex with manor and rural court in Venetian style. Next to the Canalbianco, near the border with Frassinelle Polesine and the small church of S. Lorenzo, is a small cemetery where the victims of the 1951 flood lie.

Villamarzana comes alive in the first and second weekends of July thanks to the traditional Wheat Festival, with demonstrations of old-fashioned threshing, music, games and tasting of local products.

PINCARA

This small village lies on the right bank of the Canalbianco and owes its name to an officer of the Este court, Guglielmo Pincaro, who received his investiture on this land and started the first remediation works in the 15th century.

The layout of the village runs parallel to the course of the Canalbianco and has its heart in the church of St. John the Baptist (16th century).

Close to the historical centre is a pretty example of the eddies that are typical of Polesine. These are small but deep, rounded waterpools that remind us of the ancient course of the river Po.

Following the Canalbianco, a few kilometres further on, tourists can spot Ca’ Bernarda, an imposing farmyard. Although a private property, it allows us to observe the typical characteristics of 1700s Venetian manor courts. These huge complexes could live independently of neighboring towns, being complete with chapel, manor house, stable, dovecote and a huge courtyard overlooked by the rustic porches.

Pincara is also the home of the only Enterprise Museum of Polesine: here we can retrace the steps that led to the birth of the oldest distilleries and get to know the techniques and raw materials necessary to produce liqueurs and spirits.
